Losing your job is one of the most painful things that person can go through. We often identify ourselves with our job, have positive relationships with coworkers, and in part, rely on the routine of work to give us a sense of belonging and self-control. People are looking forward to seeing us and we have a rewarding experience when we show up and do our job.
All that is lost when you lose your job.
Commonly, people ruminate about the losses. They’ve lost their income. They lost their routine and sometimes relationships with coworkers. What else can a person do than think about what you’ve lost? You can dwell on how you feel like you’re a victim. You can dwell on the past and all the good things you’ve lost. You can also overthink about the future and imagine catastrophes looming around the corner.
I have done all that when I’ve lost jobs in the past. Not only is this toxic for your mental health, it makes it hard to find another job. Employers tend to hire.
