What are the best sleep medications?
The best sleep, medication’s work for sleep, and don’t leave you with worse sleep when you don’t take the medicine. In other words isn’t tablet let’s look at it medication.
Over-the-counter medication Benadryl. It is an antihistamine it has the anti-side effect which can lead to diminish short term memory. Because of that I recommend against using it.
Other antihistamines can help for sleep, but I recommend looking up their side effects to see if impaired memory is one of them.
Melatonin is a popular counter medication for sleep now. It can leave some people tired in the morning but the main problem is it usually doesn’t work. That’s because the liver digests it quite effectively so very little actually end up getting to the brain. A workaround for this is, a dissolvable tablet of melatonin. You put it under your tongue, it dissolves into the mucosal tissue from their goes right to the brain. It sounds great, but it rarely works.
Magnesium works for some people. Like melatonin, it sounds great, taking a naturally occurring mineral for sleep. Unfortunately, it rarely works.
Herbal teas. Actually, these seem to help calm the nerves down. Preparations include chamomile and echinacea. so wonderful tastes here are a delight to the senses. Anything that helped calm the nerves down in the Plus. I suggest trying different kind of verbal and paying attention to what calms your nerves down. Then make it part of your evening routine. It’s teatime when it’s bedtime!
Some people are using marijuana but it can impair motivation and memory so that’s a no go for me.
Also, some people are using BD, gummy’s. Some people find these work in conjunction with meditation at night and exercise during the day. Probably if they kept meditating and exercising, they wouldn’t need the gummy‘s. Still some people like them, and we are legal, they seem to be used with good effect in terms of side effects, potentially there are side effects with less motivation than memory but I haven’t heard complaints of that yet.
There are many more over-the-counter sleep aids at your local pharmacy. This is just a review of several.
The most commonly prescribed sleep medication is trazodone. The generic is Diesel. Which usually no sexual side effects or weight gain, it’s a favorite for many people. It’s good at kicking in within an hour and wearing off cleanly seven or eight hours later. it works by the antihistamine side effect. That suggests it could cause weight gain but I just haven’t seen it with my patience.
Remeron helps for sleep. Like trazodone it’s a antidepressant that really helps people get to sleep. It usually does too good of a job and makes people tired the next morning. This happens about 1/3 of the time. Of course, this can leave people on safe to drive so you have to be careful with this medicine. Still, if you’re one of the lucky ones, and it helps your sleep, but also wears off by morning, this is a good sleep medicine. It doesn’t tend to wear off. If that helps you sleep, it should keep on doing that for years, if need be. The downside is weight gain. Some people can gain 10 or 20 pounds on it. If you gain that weight, it can be hard to lose it. This medicine also can help other antidepressants. Do a better job fighting depression.
There are tricyclic antidepressants that help for sleep. These have names like imipramine and amitriptyline. Sometimes they also help for chronic pain issues or depression. The downside is the have the anticholinergic side effect so they can affect memory and can cause weight gain.
But this doesn’t always happen. They were commonly prescribed in the 1980s and 1990s, and still have their usefulness today, depending on a person sleep issues.
Benzodiazepines can help for sleep as well. However, these are habit forming and so they go at the bottom of my list. They can also affect memory when used long-term. Medicines in this category include clonazepam, lorazepam and diazepam.
He can also help for sleep and low doses. These heavy sedatives include Lapine, Seroquel, and Risperdal. The downside is they tend to blunt emotions and make people less spontaneous during the day but not always. Long-term use can cause muscle twitches or weight gain, so they should be managed by a psychiatrist in most situations.
Among the light sedatives are Sonada and Zolim. Zolpidem these just help for sleep, not anxiety. They are somewhat habit forming, but sometimes when nothing else works, it’s nice to have something that does work. Often they can be slowly tapered off over it. Period of months after sleep become the new normal at night, instead of insomnia.
Recently, post traumatic stress disorder, which causes insomnia, has been treated with the beta blocker appraisal sin. Praise sin, calms the adrenaline down. Sometimes that’s part of a persons insomnia, they just have too much nervous energy. Praises and can help in those situations.
The problem with insomnia is, it can become the new normal in the brain. When night after night, it’s hard to get to sleep and stay asleep, the brain just gets in the habit of messing with you when you want to go to sleep. If you can find a medicine that helps, that’s a big step forward. You Strongly encouraging the brain to do the right thing after it’s gotten away with doing the wrong thing, sometimes for years.
The brain needs sleep. Deprived of sleep, a person is more likely to get anxiety, depression, and troubles with focus and memory.
Once you get good sleep, your brain might think it’s because of the medication. It’s better to try to convince it that your excellent new sleep habits are also to blame. So a good sleep hygiene routine in the evening should include, some kind of, verbal tea or similar beverage without caffeine. Also, meditation can be helpful to quiet the mind. In my book prescription for positivity I go over a personalized and individualized approach in chapter 4 for learning meditation. A version of that I called Meditation For Sedation is also reviewed in the book. Over 400 people have told me it has helped their sleep get better.
Also getting more orderly in your daily life. If you have, in general, to do lists for your priority items, there will be less temptation to worry about unsolved problems at night. Also it’s helpful to limit screen time, limits, social, media, and other things that whip our adrenaline system into a frenzy.
