3 Step Meditation Cured His Insomnia

A man in his 20s came to me after suffering from insomnia for five long years. The trouble started following a traumatic event, one that he couldn’t stop replaying in his mind every night. This obsessive thinking would take over as soon as he lay down to sleep, robbing him of the rest he so desperately needed.

At first, he tried a low dose of melatonin, hoping it would help him fall asleep naturally. Unfortunately, it didn’t make a difference. We then introduced trazodone, a medication commonly used to treat sleep issues, and it gave him the relief he needed to start sleeping more regularly. Once he was better rested, we could focus on addressing the underlying issue—his obsessive thinking at bedtime.

I introduced him to a three-step meditation technique specifically designed to quiet the mind and promote relaxation. It took only five minutes in my office to teach him the method, but the impact was profound. The meditation gave him a sense of control over his thoughts and became a nightly ritual he actually looked forward to. This positive shift in mindset broke the cycle of dread he had associated with bedtime. Instead of fearing the hours he would spend wide awake, he embraced the opportunity to meditate and relax.

Over the next six months, as his confidence in the meditation technique grew, he gradually phased off the trazodone under medical supervision. By focusing on this simple yet effective meditation, he was able to calm his mind and improve his sleep naturally. The vicious cycle of fearing insomnia and fueling it with anxiety was finally broken.

This story highlights how combining medication with mindfulness techniques can empower individuals to take back control of their sleep and their lives.
